Medusa is an interesting mythological character. This is why it is no surprise that girls and women pick out Medusa Halloween costumes whenever there is an opportunity for it. The head was given back to Athena to be placed on her shield, which is the famed aegis. She was pregnant when this happened, so two children came out from her, one of which is the popular winged horse Pegasus.

Medusa’s Enduring Myth

Among the many mythological characters that were introduced in Greek mythology, one monster has continued to haunt more modern stories and films that the world has today. Medusa is continuously featured in many horror or fictional literature and films and it can easily be said that this Greek monster is definitely here to stay.

Medusa is a Gorgon or a chthonic female monster in the Greek mythology. She was the daughter of Phorcys and Ceto. She was a beautiful maiden that had a lot of suitors in her time but when she was raped by Poseidon in the temple of Athena, this enraged the goddess and cursed Medusa, turning people who stared at her face into stone and changing her hair into serpents.

With such a curse, Medusa walked the earth in loneliness and her reputation has continued to scare the people. It was only when Perseus beheaded her was she put out of her misery and Perseus used her head as a weapon to turn his enemies into stone which he eventually gave to Athena to place on her shield.

Many say that Medusa was a victim of injustice but some also believed that she deserved that kind of fate. But regardless of whether she deserved it or not, her reputation will continue to live on forever.
